What a Year and It’s Just Begun

Hello hello!

It’s been quite the year. I’ve been painting and writing up a storm. I have two books up for preorder, Pirating Christmas and Magic and Weres. A conglomoration of new and newly edited of previously published works. Pirating Christmas is sci-fi romance, and Magic and Weres is Paranormal romance. I still need to work on better blurbs. :S My nemesis as always. Today, I have Sheri Velarde visiting on my blog over here.

She’s been really helping me a lot on blogs and appreciate her time and efforts. She also happens to be a great writer, so if you love romance, check her out!

I have plans. Big plans. I aim to put out five books this year. I already have two on pre-order. I have loads to do, but I will get it done. I actually aim to put out a MINIMUM of five books this year because some of them are reboots, which still takes time and money for reedits and new covers. However, not as much time and money as new ones for self publishing. Also, want to get an agent for non romance books. I love science fiction and fantasy and plan to expand my writing in that area.

I’m also painting a lot more. I started at the end of last year and I’m continuing it through. Once I’ve signed them, I will post more pictures. I feel reborn. I wrote 60K for nano, all while making homemade meals, quilting three quilt tops, painting/sketching, taking care of kids, teaching sewing class, edited around 300k words as an editor, and cleaning. I can do this. I will do this.

I thank all those whom have hung on with me through the ages and can’t wait for the next bit to happen! Come along with me for the ride, and let’s make this a fabulous year together!

You can pre-order Pirating Christmas, which includes a peak into the sequel tentatively called, Pirates of the Empire. Looking forward to a fantastic new year with all of my readers and fans!

Welcome Author Sheri Velarde!

not so silent night sale

The world of publishing is forever changing and it up to authors to try to keep up. This year has been a great year and a difficult one for me on the publishing front. On the bright side I had my first fantasy novel come out, had a book signing for it, entered new some genres and published several shorts with various publishers. On the downside I saw two of my smaller publishing houses close their doors for good. That saddened me more than I can tell you. That is also what led me to the decision to start self-publishing some of my work. I am still with some small presses and may have something with a large house next year (fingers crossed), but I also want to have some control over my publishing as well. My fiancé and I are forming our own publishing house called Stoker Publishing and Not So Silent Night is our first step towards that dream.
Not So Silent Night is a re-release with expanded scenes and has been completely re-edited. I am pretty proud of this story and think it is the perfect book to launch my self-publishing career on. It’s steamy, sweet and hopeful all at the same time. I am hoping that it is the first of many of my stories that I will be putting out there myself as I move into the new age of publishing, well at least new for me. Scared and excited at the same time. I hope you enjoy a taste of Not So Silent Night. Grab it now while it is on sale for only .99 cents! Always FREE on Kindle Unlimited!

Excerpt:
She had almost finished cleaning up in back when she heard the bell on the door ring less than five minutes before closing. “Seriously? Can’t people let me get out of here on time just one damn night?” she muttered to herself as she stormed toward the front so she could wait on her customer and then get the hell out of the store.

Anna whipped around the corner in a huff, not caring if she scared the latecomer away. She stopped in her tracks and almost forgot what had pissed her off when she saw the customer in question. The most breathtaking back view of a man she had ever seen stood just inside the doorway, and her brain stopped working for the moment. Wow, who knew broad shoulders and a great rear could stop a woman in her tracks? While she gawked like an idiot, the man turned around and proved to be even more distracting from the front. This guy was like a wall of muscle, perfect body attached to a very masculine and handsome face with the deepest blue eyes Anna had ever seen.

“Sorry, I know you are about to close, but I need a gift of flowers,” he said when he saw Anna. He had a very thick eastern European accent that she thought might be Russian, which of course only made him hotter. She noticed his eyes taking her in, and she couldn’t help but stand a little straighter, showing her curves off to her advantage while she absentmindedly ran her fingers through her long, wavy, raven hair, which most men seemed to love.

It took Anna’s brain a few moments to catch up before she could speak. Her previous anger and frustration vanished, replaced by eagerness to help this particular customer. “No problem at all. Do you have an idea of what kind of gift you are looking for? Is this for your girlfriend or wife?” Anna held her breath as she waited for this mystery man to answer, a bit annoyed with herself that she cared so much about what he might say.

Cover Reveal for Not So Silent Night by Sheri Velarde

Fellow author and friend Sheri Velarde is here today with the gorgeous cover reveal for her Not So Silent Night! Take it away Sheri.

Not So Silent Night is a very special story to me for numerous reasons. It was one of my most successful releases with Breathless Press and one of my favorite to write. Now it is about to become my first self-published book as I ready it for re-release this holiday season under my real name! It has been re-edited with some new bits added to make the story even better, but still retains the steaminess from before! The world of self-publishing is a little scary for me, but exciting at the same time! As I have had two small publishers close on me this year, I just feel that this gives me a safety net to my career and allows me more freedom as well. The world of publishing is forever changing and I am learning to go with the flow in order to keep up! I can’t think of a better way to embark on my new adventure than with Not So Silent Night, which will be out November 25th, and with the beautiful cover from artist Victoria Miller!

Happy Release Day Sheri Velarde!

To me Summer Interrupted in my nod to classic pulp fiction novels. Novels that are fun, entertaining and have a little bit of something for everyone. A little romance, a little mystery, a little horror, yet are something to have fun with. I wanted this to be a thrill ride that you could read in one day while lying on the beach. I normally write romance with a paranormal twist and that is still certainly evident in this story, but I wanted to grow as an author, explore some more areas. That is why there is more mystery in this piece, more horror, though I keep it tame and non-gory. Pulp fiction sometimes gets a bad wrap, why I will never understand, sure sometimes they were printed on cheaper paper, but the stories still entertained and it made books more affordable to everyone. That’s certainly a win in my book! Allowing people to escape and read is one of the reasons I am an author. Reading is my favorite forms of escapism and I love that I can offer the same to my readers. That’s why I loved writing this pulp fiction like story, it is pure entertainment and escapism in my opinion and for that I am very proud.

Summer Interrupted

SummerInterrupted

BLURB

Joy and Dot plan on having a summer to remember. A cabin on the beach, hot men from Harvard down the way, one last hurrah before true adulthood set in. Everything is perfect. They did not plan on their summer being interrupted by Joy’s sudden collapse in a strange room in their house, nor the mystery that surrounded it. As they look into their rental, horrifying details from the house’s past, mixed in with pirate lore of old, come to light. As more details emerge, they realize that more than their fun is at stake, that souls may hang in the balance. How can two sisters battle an evil that has haunted coastal Maine for hundreds of years?

EXCERPT

Taking a deep breath, just like the first time, she entered the room and realized immediately something was wrong. Joy closed her eyes and stepped in. At first, the room seemed perfectly normal. No blood, no ghosts, nothing scary, just a light on by the nightstand in the middle of the two twin beds. The room was actually quite cute. She could imagine her and Dot being in here when they were younger. Then she remembered the two sisters who had shared this room and what happened to them. That’s when the scene before her began to change.

The room dimmed and shifted subtly. A strong sulfur smell permeated the room. She didn’t know how, but Joy felt certain that she was seeing the past somehow, witnessing a memory. “But that’s not possible. This isn’t possible. I’m dreaming. This is just some sort of terrible dream,” Joy said to herself, determined to snap herself out of this nightmare. She pinched herself, slapped herself, and screamed hoping to wake up. Nothing worked. She tried a different approach. Maybe if she left the room in her dream, she would wake up. Turning to leave, she found herself face to face with two girls, sisters by the looks of them, the two who had been murdered here, she knew it.

Joy froze, staring at the girls who didn’t seemed to notice her at all. They were arguing with each other, but Joy found it difficult to make out the words. They sounded as if they were talking through a very static filled radio. The older of the girls grabbed something from the younger sister, and that’s when she saw him. No rational thoughts formed. Joy screamed, unheard by those in her vision, though she was sure he stared right at her. That was the last thing she remembered, piercing red eyes that chilled her soul.

Welcome Author Kenneth Hoss

Today I am thrilled to have author Kenneth Hoss here to talk a little about his latest release.

Manhattan at sunsetWhen a murder investigation turns Detective Kelli Storm’s attention to a drug kingpin, the last thing she expected was to find a link to her father’s killer from twenty years earlier.
The Washington Height’s neighborhood has turned deadly for NYPD detectives Kelli Storm and Bill Hayes. A young woman is murdered and Kelli tracks the killer to a Gentleman’s Club in Manhattan. After an unwilling witness is assaulted and left dying, Kelli and Bill turn their investigation in a new and more dangerous direction. When the DEA steps in and takes over, Kelli is forced off the case.
Working behind the scenes, she pulls out one of her father’s old case files and starts making connections she never would have dreamed possible. An old gun, new witnesses and danger lurking in the shadows have storms rising all over New York City.

A few things about Storm Rising (A Kelli Storm Novel Book 1)
Storm Rising, the first book in a four book series is set in the 33rd Precinct of the NYPD, Washington Heights. I chose this Precinct because Kelli’s father worked out of the 34th, which at the time was the only precinct for all of Washington Heights. Kelli wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a cop, or more precisely, a detective. Her assignment to the 33rd was just sheer luck of the draw.
Basing my books on an actual police department, and especially one as prestigious as the NYPD made it a little more difficult to say the least. Not only did I have to create Kelli’s world, I had to adhere to actual department procedures and terminology. For instance, did you know that the NYPD is the only department to use the term forthwith? For example, if an officer is shot, his or her partner would get on the radio and call for assistance. It might go something like this: “This is Officer Jones, badge number 12345, requesting an 85 forthwith to my location for a 10-13, officer down.”
Another thing that I have found that confuses some people, or at least they have told me they didn’t know what I meant when I put it in my books is the abbreviation RMP. No, it doesn’t stand for Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which is RCMP. An RMP is what most people would call a patrol car, except that the NYPD refers to them as a Radio Motor Patrol. Makes sense now, doesn’t it?
Along with the terminology, I also had to know department policies such as what happens after an officer involved shooting, what firearms they are allowed to carry both on and off-duty, and a myriad of other things. Some would think it too tedious or troublesome to delve so deep into the rules and regulations of a department as big as the NYPD. Actually, it was quite enlightening and far from tedious. It also helped that I had the assistance of a former NYPD police officer to aid me in my research.
All in all, it is the research and a desire to make the book not only entertaining, but factually accurate that makes it what it is. Of course, creating all of this around one kickass detective made it so much easier.

Excerpt:

She exited onto McLean and got into the left turn lane, waiting for the light. Glancing in her rearview, she noticed a black SUV a few cars back. It was a black SUV that pulled in behind Bill and Sherry and shot up their car. The light changed and Kelli made her turn.
The SUV followed and sped up, moving into the right lane and passing the other cars. The light changed and Kelli sped up. The SUV picked up speed and ran the red, causing two other cars to collide.
Traffic forced her to slow down and the SUV pulled in behind her. Her heart raced, and so did her mind. There were too many people on the streets, and innocent civilians could get hurt.
She made a quick right and punched the accelerator. The vehicle followed, squealing its tires as it made the turn. Kelli raced past the houses, sounding her horn as she approached intersections. She knew exactly where to lead them—Tibbetts Brook Park. It would be closing soon, minimizing possible casualties.
Kelli checked her rearview and could see them closing. She glanced at the speedometer. The needle pushed fifty. She slowed, made a sharp right, and punched the accelerator. The SUV turned a few seconds later. She thought about calling Kevin, but couldn’t get to her phone.
Her destination was still several blocks away, and the driver of the SUV pushed it. Her next turn came up and she took it, tires screeching on the pavement. The SUV skidded into the turn and she pushed the gas pedal to the floor. Her next turn would be coming up soon.
They closed again, but she couldn’t let the driver catch up. She saw her turn ahead and pushed her car to its limits, topping sixty. She hit the brakes, slid into the turn, and punched it again.
She passed the high school track where the road began to curve, forcing her to slow. The SUV closed and rammed her from behind. Her car lurched forward, and she fought for control. There were still houses around, and she had to make it to the park.
She pressed her foot on the accelerator and the car leapt forward, leaving them behind. She crossed Midland Avenue and entered the park. The road took a sharp curve to the right and she took it wide, maintaining her speed.
They closed again and she wanted to put an end to the chase. She slammed on the brakes and spun the wheel to the right, spinning the car sideways and coming to a stop in the middle of the road. She jumped out, drew her Glock and took cover.
The SUV screeched to a stop and three men in masks jumped out, one with an AK-47, the other two with handguns. With the car as cover, she stood and took aim at the three men. “NYPD, drop your weapons.” The men advanced and fired. Kelli dropped to the ground while bullets pelted her car and showered her with glass.

Happy Release Day Melissa Shirley

Welcome to Storybook Lake, where dreams come true.

Not all fairy tales have a happy ending. Jocelyn learned that the hard way, when she married
her high school sweetheart Keaton Shaw—only to have him break her heart.

But that was a long time ago. The papers are signed, the divorce is final, and Jocelyn is no longer a little girl with her head in the clouds. That’s why no one in Storybook can believe it when Keaton, the All-American dream boy walks into Jocelyn’s bakery, looking as sweet as one of her frosted cupcakes, and demanding a second chance with the woman he still calls his wife.

HereHeComesAgain (1)

There is something about a man who isn’t afraid to say he is wrong and Keaton Shaw, the hero in Here He Comes Again, is that guy. And what good is a hero if he isn’t built like a Greek god with a smile that makes the angel break out in song? It almost makes his past mistakes easily forgiven.

He says things like… Jocelyn, since the first time I saw you, I knew that you were the one person in the world I wouldn’t be able to live without; and… Don’t you know? You have always been my dream girl; and my personal favorite… You are my best friend and my soul mate. For as long as I live, I’ll thank God every day for giving you to me.

But more than what he says or how he looks, I like that he is flawed and that he doesn’t hide his mistakes behind excuses. He did what he did (or maybe did) and he accepts it. I can’t tell you much more than that without giving it all away, but he is just flawed enough to make his perfections even better.

The excerpt is from a time when they were seventeen and Keaton and Simon had just gotten into a fight over something Keaton said about Jocelyn.

EXCERPT

I sat with Simon all through the night, but as soon as the sun peeked out, I snatched his car keys off the dresser and drove straight to Keaton’s house. Pounding on his door at the crack of dawn didn’t satisfy me nearly as much as I hoped pounding on his face would. He opened the door, rubbing his matching black eyes, then stepped half-way outside, bare-chested and in low-riding pajama pants. I ignored his in-my-face hotness and the bitching began.
“You hit my brother?”
He gently pushed me back and stepped out onto the porch, shutting the door behind him.
I would never be accused of being the kind of girl who would have thought twice about waking up his whole family to inform them of their son’s remarkable likeness to a barbaric mule.
“He hit me back.” He rubbed a bruise on his jaw as he added, “He actually hit me first.”
“Good. Now I’m going to hit you.” In hind sight, informing him of my intention wasn’t the smartest move I could’ve made. I drew back, and he caught my fist easily in his palm as I brought it forward.
“We worked it out, Jocelyn. Leave it alone.”
Either he didn’t know me at all, or stupidity ran in his family for him to believe I would let him swing on my brother and then let it go.
I snatched my hand out of his grasp and fisted it on my hip. “He was your friend when nobody gave a shit about you, and he’s a way better person than you will ever be!” Shouting made me feel only slightly better. I wanted to punch him, but settled for poking him in the chest. “He has more character in his pinky than you have in your entire body.”
Keaton smiled at me as I insulted him, and it only infuriated me more. My Heart throbbed against my ribs. For one small fraction of a second, I couldn’t determine whether my reaction stemmed from the effect of his behavior or his body.
“Well, there ya go. It wasn’t his character we were fighting over. Feel better?”
Wiping that smug smile off his face became my new mission in life. God, I hated him. It didn’t matter how fine he looked, or how nice everyone else thought he acted. I knew the truth. Keaton Shaw personified every stereotype people associated with assholes. “You know what?” I reached out and shoved him backward. “You’re right. I have been kissed a lot, and I do get into trouble, but it isn’t your freaking business.” I pushed him again, and his back thudded against a heavy white column on the corner of the porch. “And if you have something to say about me, you should grow a pair of balls and say it.”
After a long minute of us staring at each other, his face changed beneath the bruises, and he took a step forward, bringing his body closer to me. “Fine. You were right.”
“I know!” I yelled, then more calmly asked, “About what?”
“I am jealous of Eric.” My heart heard his soft voice loud and clear and started a freaky little Mambo in my chest. He intoxicated me with his words, the scent of his soap. The dimple in the center of his chest continued down, separating the abdominal muscles in his stomach and trailing lower…lower…. Where had all that business come from?
I opened my mouth to speak, then snapped it shut, not sure what to say. I turned, walked down two steps, then marched back to stand right in front of him. “What does that mean?”
“It means I don’t like thinking about your boyfriend kissing you.” He said it as though boys said that kind of thing to girls every day—which, in my experience, they did not.

Excerpt:
His mouth twisted into a self-deprecating smile and he brushed his thumb across my cheek. I almost closed my eyes at the calm his touch brought me. I ached to rest my cheek in his palm, to let him soothe me. His hand fell away and I mourned the loss of contact, the loss of part of myself to want and wishes. I felt myself splitting, fracturing, dividing right there, and glanced at Will to see if he noticed.

He looked at me, eyes sharp and focused, and the weight of his hand pressed on my thigh through the blankets. “Have you ever done that thing where you drop something, hear it hit the ground, and when you search for it, it’s gone? You might give up after five minutes, or search intermittently for years, but it doesn’t matter. You won’t find it. It’s not there anymore. It’s sort of…gone…beyond what you can see. It’s as if it has slipped through the cracks into somewhere else. Because things don’t just vanish, right? They must go somewhere…so, somewhere else must exist…and, now, you’re here instead of there.”

He narrowed his eyes as if in thought and I fought the urge to touch the tiny lines where his skin crinkled at the corners, to smooth them for him.

“You know, I think I dropped something once.” His voice emerged so quietly I barely heard him.

He met my gaze, and gave me a lop-sided grin. “To put it more crudely, I’m guessing I’m not the man you went to bed with, and you are definitely not the Maggie I fell asleep next to.”

His words jolted me, and I wrapped my arms over my waist.

“I’m not going crazy.” The last lament of a crazy woman. “This can only be a dream. Only a dream. Otherwise, I am crazy. Only a dream. Please?”

He shook his head, his smile sad. “Is that what you want, Maggie? For me to be a dream? To wake up?”

Before I even formed a thought, I shook my head. I didn’t want that.

Welcome Author Sheri Velarde!

Today I would like to welcome back author and friend Sheri Velarde. I thought we would get to know her a little better, so without further ado, here is her author interview and a little look at her latest release, Between Love and War.

  1. What genre(s) do you write? I mainly am known as a paranormal romance author, though I am always pushing and expanding. I have a pulp fiction book coming soon, a light horror piece as well. I dabble in anything and everything. I am trying to grow as an author at all time.
  2. What was the hardest part of writing your book? Keeping the focus on Ares and Mania only. As my Gods Behaving Badly cast expands I keep getting other characters whispering in my ear that they want more page time. Lol They will each get a story of their own eventually.
  3. Are you a plotter or a pantser? Total pantser even though it even drives me nuts! I wish I plotted more, I really do, but I just like to write and see where the characters take me. Half the time the end is a surprise even to me!
  4. How long have you been a writer? I’ve been writing as long as I can remember, though I never dreamed of submitting my work. A good wanted to read one of my stories and encouraged me to try to get it published. The rest is history I suppose. I’ve been a published author going on four years now.
  5. How much time did it take from writing your first book to having it published? Truthfully only about six months. Once I decided to submit something finally, well things just picked up speed. I am still in shock that I have not only one, but multiple books published now.
  6. What other careers have you had? Retail, PR, restaurant, merchandising, you name it, there is a chance I have done it.
  7. What else would you like readers to know about you or your work? I love all things creative. I paint, make jewelry, love music. I think creativity feeds the soul. That’s why I am so supportive of other authors as well as artists of all walks of life.
  8. What is your favorite vacation spot? Paris. Do I need to say more? London is a close second. I am just in love with Europe as a whole!
  9. Which food could you not live without? Spaghetti. It’s my go to comfort food. Big juicy hamburgers and fries would be a close second, followed by pizza.
  10. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you travel? Cape Town, South Africa. One of these days. I also want to visit Greenland. Don’t know why, I just do.

Excerpt:
Sighing with relief that she hadn’t slammed the door in his face, he offered her a coffee. “I know it’s early for you, but I just couldn’t wait any longer. I spent the whole night kicking myself for the way I behaved yesterday. I was so emotional and confused I even called my sister for advice. I never call anyone for advice, let alone the goddess of love.”
“What advice did Aphrodite have?” Maia asked curiously, a slight smile playing on her face.
“To stop acting like an ass and to come and talk to you,” he admitted.
Maia actually laughed. “I always did like her. Come sit down. I really wanted to talk to you after I saw you standing outside, but you ran so fast. I tried going to your hotel as well, but they said you were no longer staying there. Your phone had been disconnected. How did you managed to disappear entirely so quickly? I was afraid I’d never see you again or get to explain what you saw.”
“And what did I see?” Ronan held his breath as he waited for an answer.
“Not something to warrant such a strong reaction, though I suppose if you had been the one who had seemingly blown me off and then I found you in the arms of another woman I would have reacted badly as well.” She took a break to sip some coffee and nibble on her croissant. Her lips were making it hard for Ronan to concentrate. All he wanted to do was capture them with his own. “My friend and business partner lost his father the other day. I spent the day before yesterday taking care of things so that he wouldn’t have to. You saw me comforting him when you stopped by. There was nothing romantic about that hug. I swear.”
“So there’s still hope for me?” Ronan asked, leaning forward, close enough to kiss her, but not daring to just yet.
“There will always be hope for you when it comes to me, Ronan. I’ve always loved you…”
He didn’t need to hear any more. He leaned in and captured her lips, kissing her like he wished he had at her opening. He knew he shouldn’t push her, that he should pull away and give Maia the space his sister advised, but the magic, love, and lust swirling around as he kissed her wouldn’t let him. He had been searching for this ever since the fall and he had lost his one true love. Now that he had her again he didn’t know if he could ever let her go. The good news was that Maia wasn’t fighting or trying to pull back. Instead she leaned into the kiss, moaning softly. That was all the encouragement that he needed. He grabbed Maia and pulled her closer, lifting her easily and settling her on his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck, never breaking their kiss.
